Congratulations to Nicola Morgan who has won the Scottish Childrens’ Book Award in the older readers category for Wasted. The winners in each of the categories were announced at a ceremony in Edinburgh yesterday. She said “I am overwhelmed and still can’t quite believe it. ‘Wasted’ was a risky book to write, because it’s unusual …but the risk paid off and I’m utterly thrilled and incredibly grateful to all the readers who voted and the adults who worked so hard to organise the awards.”
Jack worships luck and decides his actions by the flip of a coin. No risk is too great if the coin demands it. Luck brings him Jess, a beautiful singer who will change his life. But Jack’s luck is running out, and soon the stakes are high. As chance and choice unravel, the risks of Jack’s game become terrifyingly clear. An evening of heady recklessness, and suddenly a life hangs in the balance, decided by the toss of a coin. In the end, it is the reader who must choose whether to spin that coin and determine: life or death.
A group of Annan Academy pupils took part in the reading, reviewing and voting process for this award. The majority of their votes went to Teresa Flavin’s The Blackhope Enigma. You can read Sarah’s excellent review here. Anjali also wrote a brilliant review too for her favourite, Prisoner of the Inquisition by Theresa Breslin.
